DECLARATION NIGHT - 20:00



The announcement of the Braw Lad and Braw Lass is made from the Burgh Chambers Balcony by the President of the Gathering. The Braw Lad and Braw Lass are asked to say a few words before singing Braw Braw Lads’ and Gala’s Braw Braw Lasses with the townspeople before descending to the front door of the Burgh Chambers where the Braw Lass is presented with a basket of flowers by one of the local schoolchildren. The newly appointed Braw Lad and Braw Lass are joined by their Attendants to dance the “Dashing White Sergeant” with sets of children selected from every primary school in the Galashiels catchment. This is followed by a small private function in the Burgh Chambers before heading to the less formal Declaration Night Social.

SPURS RIDEOUT - 18:30



The Braw Lad, Braw Lass and their Attendants meet with the Selkirk Standard Bearer and his Burleymen.


Approximate timings:

18:30 hrs: Leave Netherdale Car Park

18:45 hrs: Leave Galafoot

19:00 hrs: Meet bands at Parsonage Road

19:15 hrs: Stirrup Cup at Burgh Buildings

20:00 hrs: Ride concludes


A brief stop for a Stirrup Cup outside the Burgh Chambers taken before dismounting. The Braw Lad and Braw Lass are then invited to the Gala Souters Association Dinner as their guests.

THREEPWOOD RIDEOUT - 16:00



The Threepwood Rideout celebrates the relationship between Galashiels and Lauder and dates back to the beginning of the Braw Lads' Gathering. The Braw Lad leads a mounted cavalcade to Threepwood and the Lauder Cornet and his followers join those assembled for the brief ceremony.


Approximate timings:

16.00 hrs: Riders proceed to Melrose Road

16.15 hrs: 1st field opposite Recycling Centre

16.55 hrs: Colmslie Road crossing

17.30 hrs: Arrive Threepwood

18.00 hrs: Leave Threepwood

SCHOOLCHILDREN’S CONCERT - 18:30



This is a celebration of Gala Songs – all Galashiels Cluster Primary Schools join in to give their rendition of a celebrated local song, thus keeping our culture, creativity and customs alive for the future. An increasingly popular concert now enjoys the ability to draw in a wider selection of musical entertainment and artists.

BRAW LADS' BIKE RIDE - 10:00



Open to all ages and abilities. Anyone wishing to participate in this popular event should meet at Galafoot at 10am. The route shall proceed via Boleside along the cycle path to Lindean and back to Galafoot at approximately 11am. Prizes are awarded to the oldest and youngest riders. This is an ideal day for all the family to follow the Braw Lad, Braw Lass and Attendants. In the interests of Health and Safety it is recommended that cycle helmets are worn. ​

BRAW LADS' COUNTRY DANCE - 19:30



The Braw Lads’ Country Dance is now a well established in the circuit of dancers in the area and is eagerly awaited and well supported by dancers from all over the Borders and further afield.


The Braw Lads’ Reel, a sixsome reel devised by the late Mrs Anne Naismith, is performed by the Principals for the first time in public and is always met with an enthusiastic ovation from the audience..

SchoolChildren's DiscoS - FROM 10:00



During the Braw Lads’ Week much of the emphasis is on the children. On the Saturday, children in P1-P5 have the opportunity to show off their dancing skills at the Braw Lads'’ Discos. The Braw Lad and Braw Lass will be there to join in the fun and games!

BRAW LADS' BALL - 18:30



For over a decade now the Ball has been held on the Saturday evening at the start of the Braw Lads’ Week. This has proved to be a popular move and the event quickly reestablished itself as one of the highlights of the Gathering. Entertainment by Bleeker and Juneilian Scottish Dance Band,

KIRKING OF THE BRAW LAD and braw lass - 11:00



St Paul's Church, Galashiels


The annual Kirking gives time for calm reflection before the week starts in full. The service is typically held in a place of worship of the Braw Lads choosing and is open to the community to join the congregation.

BRAW LADS' SPORTS - FROM 10:00



The Braw Lads’ Sports is held at Netherdale and remains a favourite event for many. The Galashiels Town Band and the Galashiels Ex-Service Pipe Band are there to entertain while the youngsters of the town represent their school in the Races, Football Festival and the Potted Sports. Some may prefer the pony rides or face painting. However everything stops to watch the Principals' Race which is always fun and it’s a delight to watch as the Braw Lass is presented with a bouquet by one of the local schoolchildren.

Lindean RIDE OUT - 18:00



The ride out commemorates the religious history of Galashiels with a ride to the Auld Kirk at Lindean where in a short ceremony the Braw Lad lays a wreath of wild flowers on the Preachers Cross.

6.00pm Leave Netherdale and ford the River Tweed

7.30pm Arrive Lindean
8.15pm Leave Lindean
8.30pm Arrive at Hollybush for the Lindean Chases
9.30pm War Memorial
10.00pm Ride concludes

Braw lads' Swimming Gala - 18:30



The annual Swimming Gala is held at Galashiels Swimming Pool. The competitors age from 8 to 12 years and come from the TD1 area. Points are awarded for those taking part, the school with the accumulative highest number of points at the end of the evening wins the coveted Douglas Brown Trophy. The Braw Lad, Braw Lass and Attendants are present to lead the cheering and to present the Trophy and medals to those on the podium.

EX-BRAW LADS’ AND LASSES' ASSOCIATION DINNER - 19:00



The Ex-Braw Lads’ and Lasses' Association Dinner is extremely well supported by Ex-Principals and public alike, filling the Volunteer Hall. The Braw Lad, Braw Lass and Attendants are greeted with enthusiastic applause as they are about to be seated at the top table as the Associations' guests. The evening combines tradition with music, song and lyric while the speeches range from the poignant and serious through to hilarity and smiles.

TORWOODLEE RIDEOUT - 17:45



The ride out leaves Netherdale to make its way to Torwoodlee to visit the Laird of Torwoodlee. A small ceremony takes place at the Old Tower where the Braw Lad removes a Sod from the grounds and the Braw Lass takes a stone from the Tower to use at the Ceremony at the Old Town Cross on Braw Lads’ Day.

This is a chance for everyone in Galashiels to show their creativity and join in the fun. Judging will take place at 6.30pm. Prizes are awarded to the various categories.

CIVIC RECEPTION - 19.00

​The Civic Reception is hosted by the President of the Gathering and is held in the Volunteer Hall. The evening is an opportunity for the Braw Lads’ Gathering to welcome our overseas visitors and to say thank you to the many landowners, sponsors and people who offer goods and services for their generosity. The evening is also the perfect opportunity to meet the Braw Lad, Braw Lass and Attendants.

INVESTITURE CONCERT - 19.30



Admission by Donation

Music from various local artistes.


The Braw Lad will be sashed by our 25th year Braw Lad and Braw Lass, The Braw Lass will be sashed by two of our overseas visitors.


The Investiture of the Braw Lad and the Braw Lass is traditionally held on the Friday night. At this ceremony, they both receive their sashes, which will be worn during the next 24 hours. The evening is the precursor for the Braw Lads’ Gathering. Such is this ceremonies importance that many visiting Principals from the Border towns are present to witness and play their part in the ceremony.

BRAW LADS' GATHERING - 8:00



A ceremonial ride out, established in 1930 to commemorate events and associations in the history of the town. It is led by the Braw Lad and Braw Lass, along with their four Attendants, who carry out ceremonies along the route.

MARCH OF EX-PRINCIPALS AND ROSES CEREMONY - 19:50



Now well established, this ceremony provides a fitting closure to the day. All Past-Principals of the Braw Lads'’Gathering are invited to march from the foot of Bank Street Brae to the War Memorial. The march sets off at 7:50pm allowing the party, led by the Braw Lad and Braw Lass, to arrive at the War Memorial for 8pm. The Braw Lass, accompanied by the Braw Lad and Attendants, places the "mingled roses" at the foot of the War Memorial as a mark of respect and in remembrance.of those from Galashiels who gave their lives during wartime.

Final Fling - 20:30



The Ex-Braw Lads’ and Lasses' Association hold this event annually with live music playing into the early hours in a packed Volunteer Hall. The Braw Lad, Braw Lass and Attendants relax with friends and family whilst receiving congratulations from many well wishers on a job well done.
